Software Utility

There are a number of software applications and utilities available to both the novice and expert computer user. The problem today isn’t finding one that exists, but selecting the right one from a world of options. The following are a few tips to use when choosing the one that is right for you.

Price

The number one thing to consider, as with any other type of shopping, is the price. The broad range of prices available is matched only by the variety and customization of different software. Of course, it is important to take the time to find the price that best fits your budget.

Often times, older version of software make bargain hunting a must. Why purchase the latest version of MS Word, for example, if your computer and your functional requirements are equally served by an older version?

Compatibility

Be sure that you stick to software that is compatible with the computer you will be operating. This can include everything from the operating software version you are running to your computer’s memory, or RAM, hard disk space, video card and more.

If you are running Windows, right click on your Computer icon and then click on Properties form the list of options. The window that appears will provide you with details on your computer’s processor, memory and operating system.

Ease of Use

Last but not least, assess if the software you are considering to buy is user-friendly. Ask yourself if it fits within your capability to operate, or if it is designed for a more specialized user. An example of this might be choosing between word processing software and desktop publishing software. The latter is more complex and offers more capabilities beyond simply drafting documents.

Most online software retailers provide detailed descriptions and system requirements of their applications, so be sure to check there too.
